Maybe
but how many evo's ran in Le Mans.

Over the years BMW has comissioned a number of renowned artists to use one of their as a rolling canvas.
Each of these have competed in a race and none of them have ever been hit.

Nope, Evos haven't run at Le Mans AFAIK... but...
BMWs haven't ever won the WRC have they?...Far less for 4 years in a row have they?

Just some picong, padna. Don't get yuh knickers in a knot...I like BMWs...and Subarus too...

^ ^ ^ Yup, it's hottt...you're preaching to the converted, Dawg. I love cars...not just Mitsubishi Evos.

It's just that IMHO, Evos are the best alternative available for poorass 2nrs like me to enjoy
true supercar performance for "peanuts" (relatively speaking.)

. Reliable 4wd system...
. Über-quick: 0-60 mph: 4.4 sec... Top Speed: 155 mph (limited)...175+ mph (unlimited)

That's pretty close to current supercar numbers right there, dawg...and they are all OEM (stock) too...

Nope, Evos are NOT perfect. IMHO it's like a FWD on STEROIDS Exclamation
While "adhesion" is fantastic and the "limit" is very high; I still don't like the "handling."

Too much understeer and too hard to "rotate" with the gas pedal.

Even without a rear AYC, the drivetrain still "fights" the driver for control...
so consistent times are almost impossible on a circuit (especially after the front tyres start to overheat due to understeer.)

Yup it's NOT as smooth and progressive as a good RWD car (like a BMW Wink )
But I think I can get it to handle as well as, if not better than the best that BMW has to offer...We'll see!
And with a few upgrades you have a car that can run with (and often out-stop, outrun and out-handle) some of the best iron from the US and Europe costing TEN to TWELVE times more Exclamation No BMW...Porsche...or Corvette etc. can offer that "bang-for-the-buck."

It's not just "fan boy" opinion, Dawg. Used Evos give me options that most others don't offer, at a price that I can afford...at least, over time. Very Happy

I am not ponging EVO's
I like them myself
and speaking of pooass tuner's
I was lucky enough to buy a 16 yr old beemer with a four figure budget, someday maybe I could buy something with similar performance to an EVO
Like you said, Best Bang for the Buck.

^ ^ ^ Yup, buying and upgrading a new car can cost as much as a medium sized house these days.
I can't afford that, so buying "used" and upgrading is the only way to go for me...and that still means extended savings.

Congrats on the Bimmer. What model is it?
And more important...what upgrades do you have planned?

woaw....been a long while.....really long....

pros and cons to both

disagree that the sti's interior is inferior - the seating on the 02 bug eyes are some of the best imho and are all height adjustable which can allow the driver to dial in the best driving position - improve confidence

evo recaros aren't height adjustable

the mivec turbo engine is pretty amazing....

>MY03 sti + came with twin scroll + equal length headers so less rumble....but it all contributes to the experience of driving an sti, esp on a winding road with 3 or 4 other sti-s...its visceral

Hi rip. Long time no see. I have no STi experience I'm afraid. My wife's car is a Legacy.

sti's interior is inferior... Comparing pix IMHO the STi is more luxurious than Evos.

evo recaros aren't height adjustable... In spite of the lack of height adjustment the E6 Recaros are more comfortable than the Legacy's. At 6' 2" those give me a backache.

mivec turbo engine is pretty amazing... ALL 4G63s are amazing... even without Mivec Laughing
Seriously, until the E10's 4B11T, the 4G63 had the highest torque output of any 2.0L 4-cylinder production engine ever made... and produced more bhp in stock trim than almost all competition 2.0L 4-cylinder turbo engines made in the 80's and 90's by Cosworth et al.

Handling... IMHO NO current 4WD turbo car locally available handles like a good RWD car.
That said, among the locally available 4WD "hi-po" cars, the Evo (especially the RS & RS2 models with no AYC) still outshines all STi's for handling, "turn-in", steering feel, and brakes according to the Road Tests that I've read so far.

My $0.02¢

BTW how is the car going?

^ sold the sti about 3 years ago....new owner put an FMIC kit etc which for me may not have helped to balance the car given that the layout of the STi focused on balance....

fortunate enough to get a 9MR so slowly learning it ...taking time

anyways....might not be the place to ask questions....but i have a few...

for the ct9a chassis:-

-what are good brake rotor replacements? dba 4000/5000 series?

- similarly, what would be good pads to compliment these? my exp with Hawks was not bad, just wondering if a light Daily driver with spirited driving has better pad options

- will try to contribute more as i learn an exp

Let me start by saying that the MR is the heaviest in the range. So a straight "OEM replacement" with another rotor of the same size is not going to solve the "stopping" problem... At least, not indefinitely.

So to go the "budget route" like me, I would suggest buying used, "low-milage" Evo 9 rotors on eBay... (and skimming them on a Brake Lathe if necessary)... or buy NEW rotors from a US Mitsubishi Dealer.

Use CarboTech pads... Ferrodo DS 2500 pads... or OEM Brembo pads... in that order.

Carbotech™ XP8™ through Carbotech™ XP12™ (Racing)
BTW Tyrant is the CarboTech Dealer in the UK.

To solve the "wear issues" AND shorten braking distance significantly... you either have to lose weight (ie. body panels, etc) ($$$$)... or get a "big brake" kit. (even more $$$$)
Sanctifier wrote:
The 1st question is..."How deep are your pockets? and
the 2nd question is..."What diameter rims do you have now?...
YOU WILL NEED 18" RIMS that will "clear" the replacement Brembos & BIG rotors.

There is an alternative to the super expensive, competition "big brake kit" and the 18" rims than these require. Do what I did... but be warned... It can't be done quickly!
You have to "lurk" and "PM" like mad on popular Evolution Forums like "Mitsubishi Lancer Register" (UK) and "Evolutionm.net" (USA). eBay is another excellent source for Evo bits.
Sanctifier wrote:
Idea Go Evo X front brakes, 18"rims (& proportioning valve / Master cylinder)!
About a year ago, I bought the 350 mm front rotors, dust-shields, Brembo calipers, bolts etc. off an almost new Evo X that was being stripped for rally use in the UK.
I also bought two sets of Evo X 8 1/2 J x 18" rims from eBay.

It's a VERY popular 'mod' for earlier Evos (E5 - E9) in the UK. There is a lot of info on MLR about the swap... and if you're lucky it's less than HALF the price of a Brembo big brake kit.
That leaves you with some change for Mitsubishi Evo X rims... again at 1/4 of Dealer price on eBay.

And then my lurking on eBay really paid off... I got a used rear StopTech big brake kit... 328 mm rear rotors, calipers, etc. They were still too expensive IMHO... but worth it!

All I need is an E10 Master cylinder & Booster with OEM Proportioning Valve for perfect brake balance.

My $0.02¢

^ thanks for the input....

from my understanding, weight / pads / rotors and tyres all contribute to stopping the car.

the car did come with 18" rims that would be a little heavier than stockers...that said...

the dba 5000 two piece seem to save ~ 3 lbs per side on the front in weight...which should help to bring the rotating mass to a stop sooner....

researching the pad selection and seen the carbotechs get pretty good reviews....ebc greens as well....will let you know when i decide...

the BBKs are definitely out of the option...
(there was a BBK shootout using the evo in one of those sport magazines and the stoptech came out ontop, whilst others had a > stopping distance than stock)

have not even considered the option of running the evoX rotors...so thanks for that option...

will let you know what i decide eventually as this would be the first upgrade i'd be pursuing...

I acutally have project mu front rotors and pads and rear project mu pad son stock rotors and let me tell you, the stopping power is superb.

I had to buy a set of rear hawk as I was not monitoring and the pads ran low before i could order a set of project mu replacements and the stopping distance increased

have not tried those pads the evo guru recommends but for a pad at a reasonable cost, it works great

downside with all these "racing pads" is brake dust
