New Mazda Iconic SP compact sports car concept!

Mazda Motor Corporation unveiled the Mazda Iconic SP at the Japan Mobility Show 2023. It is a new compact car concept that incorporates a two-rotor rotary engine that powers an EV drivetrain. Their objective is to satisfy customers who love cars and who “desire a car that simply embodies the joy of driving”.

The two-rotor rotary EV system maintains a compact layout, enabling a low centre of gravity, essential for enhanced driving performance. Batteries can be charged either by a renewable energy source, or via the two-rotor rotary engine running carbon-neutral fuel. The car was unveiled in Viola Red, which is definitely one for the ages.

Masahiro Moro, Mazda’s Represetative Director, President and CEO remarked that “Mazda will always deliver vehicles that remind people that cars are pure joy and an indispensable part of their lives. As a car-loving company that mass-produces the inspiring mobility experience, we are committed to shaping the future with our partners sharing the same goal, as well as our fans, where everyone can proudly say ‘we love cars’. With such a strong will Mazda is committed to enrich life-in-motion for those we serve.”

Mazda’s philosophic objective is to marry the ideas of the ‘Joy of Driving’ with the ‘Joy of Living’ in a human-centric way to crate better mobility experiences for customers. So you could say that they are trying to let everyone have their cake and eat it too, in terms of building the most eco-friendly platforms while delivering on driving enjoyment and user experience.

The Mazda iconic SP is designed as a compact, lightweight, low-slung performance car. The two-rotor EV system features a scalable rotary engine that car be configured to run various fuels such as hydrogen, with the objective being to run a carbon-neutral fuel. The battery can also be charged at a plug-in power outlet, preferably one powered by renewable energy so that the car can truly run in a carbon-neutral way.

The powerful (370PS/365hp) rotary EV system’s compact packaging (resulting in a nice low hood) and the car’s 50:50 weight distribution will translate into excellent driving performance. Overall weight is planned at 1450kg (3197lb), and we expect that like most EV powertrains, torque will be instantly available.
