Ford Mustang Mach-E GT now at CARMAX T&T

The dawn of electric vehicles is happening now in Trinidad & Tobago, especially with the latest EV arrival– the Ford Mustang Mach-E! Mustang purists can rest assured– the petrol-powered Ford Mustang is still evolving with Dark Horse and other variants debuting internationally.  Consider the Mach-E as the SUV version of the Mustang lineup. Hau Thai-Tang, Ford’s chief product development and purchasing officer said “People want a car that’s thrilling to drive, that looks gorgeous and that can easily adapt to their lifestyle – and the Mustang Mach-E delivers all of this in unmatched style.”

Thrust-related numbers on electric are generally mind-boggling– you’ve got 480hp and a whopping 634ft-lb of torque is available from the Mach-E’s dual motors, which power all four wheels (eAWD). Thus, despite the EVs considerable 4962lbs of weight, 0-60 still occurs in just 3.8 seconds (3.5 on the GT Performance Edition)– well into Porsche Taycan territory. Top speed is limited to 200km/h (124mph). Like many EVs, the Mach-E drivetrain operates through a single speed transmission– higher speeds will require more energy usage. Pretty impressive stuff when you’ve got comfy seating for five, instead of a distinct four, or the bare minimum 2+2 of most sporty cars.

And you even get a roomy 4.7 cubic foot frunk (front trunk).

The Mach-E GT’s driving range is estimated at 389-489 km, depending on driving style, traffic  and road conditions. This unit is UK-spec, so its charging port is Type 2. Type 1 is designated for use in the Americas, but there are a growing number of Type 2 charging points in Trinidad due to the gray market. ANSA Automotive can also supply home charging units to keep the 98kWh lithium-ion, extended range battery bank topped up via 110 or 220v dedicated-breaker connections. Either way, 389km is more than enough to get from Port-of-Spain to Cedros and back. Here in Trinidad, we have a warm climate, which bodes well for accessing the maximum rated EV range.

The MagneRide dampers will bring delight in the corners as much as the straights, promising to manage both ride quality and handling as it continuously adapts to the road’s surface. The Mach-E utilizes independent Macpherson struts up front and independent multilink suspension at the rear, both with stabilizer bars. In terms of braking, on GT models you get 362mm ventilated 4-piston vented discs at the front (385mm on the GT Performance Edition) and 316mm single piston discs at the rear, with red painted calipers, adding to the sporty look.

Ride height on standard models is 5.8 inches while the GT model sits slightly lower at 5.2 inches (5.1 on the Performance Edition). This particular Mach-E is fitted with 245/45-20 Pirelli P Zero tyres on 21-inch factory alloy wheels.

That future feeling begins when you see the signature LED headlights animate as they are activated, and when you subsequently approach any of the doors. There you will encounter missing door handles, replaced with a push button which opens the door (once the key is in your pocket or nearby). You can also set an entry access code as well. Once inside you will also appreciate the novel inner door unlock lever. On entry the Mach-E’s screens also light up with a Mustang-themed animation until you push the start button to power up the drive motors.

On the large 15.5” central screen you can configure everything– from the ambient lighting to the three distinct driving modes– Whisper, Active and Untamed.

There’s also the Unbridled mode which slightly reduces peak power to deliver longer periods of performance driving at track day events such as Autocross.

These modes vary the vehicle’s driving dynamics, ambient lighting, interface theme, and even the sounds you hear. And speaking of sounds, this particular model features the premium Bang & Olufsen (B&O) audio with wraparound soundbar across the width of the entire dashboard. You can connect your smartphone via Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay or Android Auto to enjoy seamless functionality and your favorite tunes.

The seats are very comfortable, offering good side support plus a combination of leather and fabric (using synthetic Active-X material). They should hold you snugly in place while wrapping around the corners of your favorite freshly paved winding road, cruising down the highways, and stay comfortable when you’re stuck in traffic. The floating armrest can be flipped up providing room to rest handbags or packages or store items in the bin below.

Despite the sloping roofline, there’s a decent amount of room in the back seats too, especially when fitted with the panoramic glass roof, which offers more headroom in addition to a great view. Rear passengers also enjoy their own A/C vents and USB and power outlets. The rear seats also feature ISOFIX child seat anchors and fold down to expand the rear cargo area from 29.7 to 59.7 cubic feet.

There are tons of safety features, standard in the GT model such as front and rear cross traffic alerts, parking sensors, reversing and all-around cameras are just the beginning. A driver’s knee airbag and a new airbag between driver and front passenger are added to front, side and curtain airbags. You also get adaptive cruise control with stop and go, lane keep assist, blind spot detection, and emergency brake application to mitigate or avoid oncoming potential impacts. If braking isn’t enough the Mach-E will also boost the steering assist to increase the odds of avoiding an accident when swerving away.

Our favorite convenience feature is the powered smart tailgate’s foot swipe activation– with your key nearby you can wave your foot under the tailgate to open, pause, and close it. And GT models also get pinch sensors to ensure the tailgate automatically stops if it meets too much resistance, in order to avoid injury. Of course you can use the tailgate’s open and close buttons or the remote to activate the tailgate as well.

So if you like performance but want room for friends, family and cargo, the Mach-E is a top pick. This particular unit is priced at around TT$1.1M, but prices will vary according to specifications. We expect the range to start as low as TT$660K for RWD lower spec versions but you'll need to confirm on a per-order basis as all Mach-E units are technically special orders at present. Call or visit CARMAX Trinidad & Tobago to check availability and to place your order.
