You may have seen the Toyota Yaris Cross vehicle on the road prior, but Toyota Trinidad and Tobago Limited recently held a launch event at the top floor of the UDECOTT carpark at the Hyatt in Port-of-Spain to officially welcome the new Hybrid model to our market. 

The Yaris Cross as its name suggests is a crossover version of the Toyota Yaris, now available with an eco-friendlier hybrid powertrain. With carbon neutrality on the periphery of most people’s attention, Toyota has also taken the leading position by installing a 100KW solar panel array atop TTTL’s San Fernando branch.

Getting back to the new Yaris Cross, the powertrain is comprised of a 1.5-litre, inline 4-cylinder DOHC, dual VVTi gasoline engine, making 87hp@5500rpm and 89ft-lb of torque at 4000-4800rpm. The vehicles hybrid system brings on an additional 26.2KW or 35hp. Braking duties and handled with with single caliper discs all around, vented at the front and ABS, stability control, hill-start assist and traction control are all standard. 

The next generation of Toyota Safety Sense, provides a pre-collision system which we actually tested in real life on the Yaris, which worked as intended. Adaptive cruise, lane departure assist, and auto high beams are also part of TSS which comes standard with the new Yaris Cross. Additionally you have the assurance of 6 airbags on board. 

We had the pleasure of seeing the new Yaris Cross in a few different colours in person at the launch event– the outdoor location was a welcome change of pace, despite being at the mercy of the weather. Under the lights it was easy to appreciate the Yaris Cross’ modern design, roomy passenger and cargo space and unexpected features such as the panoramic glass roof and Android and Apple friendly infotainment system.
